Abstract
This paper presents a new main European research initiative to develop interoperability of enterprise applications and software, i.e., the ATHENA Integrated Project (IP). The originality of the ATHENA’s research approach is the holistic perspective of the solutions tackling the interoperability problems at all layers of the enterprise: business and knowledge, ICT and incorporating ontologies at all these levels. The paper, after introduce the context and basic concepts and definitions, presents the user requirements and state-of-the-art (SoA). Then, the project strategy, methodology and principal research domains will be given. The main contribution of the paper is focused on describing the expectations and vision of the ATHENA IP in face of the scientific advances of the SoA in technologies for interoperability of heterogeneous enterprise networks and their applications.
