Abstract
The challenges of the global market have been motivating companies to search how they can improve their competitiveness through partnership. However, and especially for SME companies, the lack of resources and know-how has been preventing them to move ahead in that direction. The IMS SMART-fm project, develops research on this subject intending to demonstrate and stimulate the furniture industrial sector (mainly SME based) how to improve its competitiveness through the adoption of a standard-based extended environment. This paper, after highlighting the general motivations SMEs can have on adopting extended enterprise practices, proposes an architecture for a low-cost standard-based platform based on Grid computing and Web Services, skilled to support an extended environment for the complete furniture product life cycle. The platform has been validated by industry, aiming to be a referential pilot demonstrator for SMEs.
